Биография

Yury Kondakov won the 1972 World Junior All-around Championships. His first Soviet distance title came in 1973, in the 1,500. In 1974 he won his second Soviet distance title, this time at 10,000 m. The 1975 season was probably Kondakov's best as he won a bronze at the World All-around Championships and his only Soviet all-around title, while winning his third and fourth distance titles in the 1,500 and 5,000. While winning the 5,000 at the Soviet Championships in Medeo, Kondakov set his only world record, clocking 7:08.92. At the 1976 Olympics, he won silver in the 1,500, in his only start at those Olympics, while at the 1978 European All-around Championships he won his only distance medal at the World or European All-around Championships by winning the 1,500 metres. In 1980 Kondakov won his final Soviet distance title, over 1,500 metres and qualified for the Olympics, where he placed fifth in the 1,500.
