Viktor Bushuyev first made to the Soviet national weightlifting team in 1955, and became the top lightweight lifter between 1957 and 1960. In that period, he won three World Championships (1957-1959), two European Championships (1958, 1959), and the Olympic gold in Rome. In addition, he set five new lightweight world records in this period, all in total. Bushuyev was also Soviet lightweight champion in 1958 and 1960, while taking silvers in 1957, 1962 and 1963 and bronzes in 1959, 1961 and 1964. Bushuyev quit lifting after he did not make the 1964 Soviet Olympic team, and became the coach of the “heavy athletics” section of Torpedo Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod).
