Steve Scott was the greatest American miler of the 1980s. He was TAC champion at 1,500/mile in 1977-79 and 1982-83, and won the 1978 NCAA 1,500 for U Cal Irvine. Scott never won a major international championship but was frequently on the podium in those events and major European invitationals. He was second at the 1983 World Championships, and third in the 1987 Pan American Games. He also competed at the 1987 Worlds and the 1977 and 1979 World Cups. In 1982 Scott set an American mile record of 3:47.69 that lasted as the American record for 25 years, until broken by Alan Webb in 2007.
