One-half of the Brothers of Destruction, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, along with partner Chirag Shetty, has been a trailblazer in doubles badminton in India.
Born on August 13, 2000, in Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy took to badminton early, inspired by his father, who was a state-level player, and his elder brother.
In 2014, Satwik joined the famed Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, where he decided that he would specialise in doubles.
The year 2016 marked a pivotal point in Satwik’s career. South Korean coach Kim Tan Her, the then doubles coach of Indian badminton, opted to pair up Satwik with Mumbai-born Chirag Shetty.
It was a curious combination considering neither understood the other’s language and both were similar aggressive-mined players who were more adept at the back court.
A series of disappointing results followed and the two tried to make it work on the court. Things, however, finally started to click for the duo in 2017 as they managed to make the quarter-finals of the Korea Open and French Open.
