Richard Bachtell was born in Wisconsin but spent much of his life in York, Pennsylvania, the American home of weightlifting for many years. Bachtell competed at the 1932 Olympics, placing sixth as a featherweight. He won US titles six times, in 1929-31, 1934-35, and 1937. Bachtell became a winemaker and beekeeper, making homemade wine and honey in his cellar in York.
