Биография

Marty Engel was AAU hammer throw champion in 1953. At the 1955 Pan American Games, he was silver medalist in the hammer throw, and bronze medalist in the shot put. At the 1952 NCAA Championships, he was second for NYU. In July 1954 Engel broke the American record by throwing 59.55 (195-4½). At the 1953 Maccabiah Games, Engel won the hammer throw gold medal, adding a silver in the discus.

In the early 1960s Engel injured his ankle badly and taught himself to rotate clockwise, rather than counter-clockwise, and still threw over 52 metres. Engel later settled in Centreport, New York and became a well-known private throwing coach.

Personal Bests: SP – 15.40 (50-6½) (1954); DT – 43.13 (141-6) (1956); HT – 61.72 (202-6) (1960).
