Manfred Bock was a decathlete from Hamburg. Beside his 10th place at the 1960 Rome Olympics he won a bronze medal at the 1962 European Championships with 7,835 points and also won the German Championships the same year. In the spring of 1963 he travelled to California to receive a university scholarship but did not stay. His performances then went down rapidly and he could not qualify for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Nevertheless he improved the German record to 8,326 points (1962 table) in June 1964. After his active career he studied sports at the Sporthochschule Cologne and worked as a sports teacher near Hamburg. He also worked as a trainer for his home club TSV Uetersen. He died from a heart attack aged 69 years in October 2010.
