Биография

Rower Lutz Ulbricht won the gold medal with the so-called Deutschland-Achter (German Eights) of famed rowing coach Karl Adam at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. They also won the West German nationals in 1968. This crew was named Team of the Year in 1968 and was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sport award. The crew then carried the Olympic Flag into the stadium at the 1972 München Olympics.

From Rudergemeinschaft Frankfurt, Ulbricht started his rowing career early in 1963 with non-Olympian Detlef Damboldt in the coxless pairs. In 1965 both moved to the coxless fours, with Ulbricht claiming his first national title. The crew also won the silver medal at the Europeans. In 1966 Ulbricht moved to the Deutschland-Achter and won the 1966 Worlds and the 1967 Europeans.

In 1969 Ulbricht came back to a coxless pair with non-Olympian Bernd Gördes and won the West German nationals. One year later he partnered with Udo Brecht and won bronze at the Worlds. In 1972 he rowed together with Erwin Haas but failed to qualify for the final. They then won the B-final and ranked seventh.
