Биография

László Jeney was goalkeeper for the Hungarian national team, competing in four Olympics (1948-60). After the famous Hungary-Soviet “blood-in-the-water” match at the 1956 Olympics, he refused to stand for the Soviet National Anthem, the match coming only weeks after Soviet tanks had invaded Hungary to crush the Hungarian October Uprising, killing many Hungarians. Unlike many of his teammates, he returned to Hungary when he found his wife was pregnant back home. He worked for the Vasas Sports Club and ran a Budapest bar until his death in 2006.
