Having won an international cross-country skiing competition in Chamonix in 1914, Kléber Balmat then served as a mountain infantryman on the Russian front during World War I. For the Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, he qualified for cross-country and jumping, and eventually competed in jumping and Nordic combined. In 1925 he was French Champion in skiing and two years later set a new national ski jumping record of 47 m, which he increased to 54 m at the 1928 Winter Olympics.
