Johnny Gray was an 800 metre specialist who competed in the event at four consecutive Olympics, from 1984-96, winning a bronze medal in 1992. Gray also won gold medals in the 800 at the 1987 and 1999 Pan American Games. He also competed at three World Championships (1987, 1991, 1993) and four editions of the Goodwill Games, winning that title in 1986.
Gray ran in college at Santa Monica College and then at Arizona State University. He was a six-time US Champion in the 800, also winning the Olympic Trials in 1988, 1992, and 1996. In 1984-85, Gray set US records in the event, recording 1:43.74 in June 1984, and eventually lowering the mark to 1:42.60 in August 1985.
Gray later went into coaching, working at Harvard-Westlake School, UCLA, and the University of Central Florida. He is a member of the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame, the Santa Monica College Hall of Fame, the Millrose Games Hall of Fame, and the Mt. Sac Relays Hall of Fame.
