Hugo Lahtinen was an enormously versatile athlete. He began as a speed skater and then switched to athletics. He was also successful in football, skiing, wrestling and cycling. Lahtinen set Finnish records in the 400 metres (1913) and three-times in the long jump, as the first Finn to better 7 metres (1914). Lahtinen was a four-time Finnish Champion in the pentathlon (1915, 1917, 1919, 1921) and twice in the long jump. He was later trained as a physical education teacher and became coach of the Finnish athletics teams in 1928 and 1932. Lahtinen also wrote several books on sports and sports facilities and was active in the Finnish Athletics Federation.
