Georgios Tsakanikas was a shot putter and discus thrower who competed at three Olympics – 1956, 1960, and 1964. Tsakanikas won the shot gold medal at the 1959 Mediterranean Games and was a five-time shot champion at the Balkan Games (1955, 1957, 1959-61). At the Mediterranean Games he was second in the shot in 1955 and third with the discus in 1959. He added a silver medal (1958) and three bronze medals (1954, 1966-67) in the shot put at the Balkan Games. Tsakanikas was a 14-time Greek shot put champion and set the national record of 18.21 in September 1964 in Athina. He was the first Greek shot putter to better 16, 17, and 18 metres.
