Биография

Middle-distance runner Ellen Tittel-Wellmann was eliminated in the heats of the 1,500 in 1972 as Ellen Tittel and came in seventh four years later in Montréal 1976, competing as Ellen Wellmann. She was first married to Paul-Heinz Wellmann, although they later divorced, and she then married another German middle-distance runner Thomas Wessinghage.

In 1971 Tittel-Wellmann won a bronze medal at the European Championships in the 1,500 and she came in 10th in 1974. She also won the 1970 European Cup and finished fifth in 1973 and 1975. At the European Indoors she won the title in 1973, adding a bronze in 1975. In all, she won 38 German Championships over different distances and was chosen as the 1975 Sportswoman of the Year.

Tittel-Wellmann trained as a chemical laboratory assistant but later studied law. She became a member of the Board of the Regional Sports Association in Rhineland-Palatinate and was responsible for the department Women in Sport. In 2004, Tittel-Wellmann was named president of the Boehringer Ingelheim tennis club. In 1975 she was awarded the Sports Badge of North Rhine Westfalia.
