Ed Ferry joined up with Conn Findlay to form one of America's greatest ever pair-oared boats. They won the national title in that event in 1961, 1962, and 1964, and were Pan American Games champions in 1963 (with the non-Olympian cox Charles Blitzer), in addition to winning their gold medal at Tokyo in 1964. Ferry went to Stanford but was an ensign in the navy at the time of his Olympic performance.
