Dan Brand attended the University of Nebraska but he really did not develop as a wrestler until after college, playing freshman basketball for the Cornhuskers. He was coached at Nebraska by 1952 Olympian, Bill Smith, and after college he followed Smith to San Francisco's Olympic Club, where his potential began to come out. Brand made the 1960 Olympic team, placing fifth in Rome, and then finished third at the 1962 World Championships. In 1963 and 1964 he won the AAU freestyle title as a middleweight and the 1964 AAU title in Greco-Roman. After the 1964 Olympics, he retired from competition and began a career as an engineer. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
