Charley Ellis grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, but was in the US Army at the time of the 1964 Olympics. After the Olympics and leaving the service, he turned professional, winning his first fight in September 1965 againnst Juan Rueda. Ellis fought for eight more years, but had only 11 pro fights, and he won them all. Despite this, he never had a title fight, fighting mostly in Miami or Tennessee, and he retired in July 1973 after a TKO victory over Dave Wyatt.
