Биография

Álvaro de Figueroa and his brothers José and Luis were sons of the Count of Romanones, a liberal politician and president of the Government of Spain on several occasions between 1912 and 1919, and nephews of the Marquis de Villamejor, the first IOC Member from Spain. After the 1916 general elections de Figueroa was proclaimed deputy for the District of Castuera as he was the only candidate. He held his seat in the following elections until 1923. During the Second Republic, he was elected deputy for Guadalajara in the 1936 elections. During the reign of Alfonso XIII, de Figueroa briefly served as mayor of Madrid in 1921-22. He resigned from office after violent riots in response to the Madrid City Council attempting to charge fees for the Metro. The Municipal Police protected the mayor with their sabres against members of the Civil Guard.
