Zbigniew Kaczmarek was subsequently disqualified as the gold medalist in Montréal at 15 October 1976 for having taken anabolic steroids. In 1982 he fled with his son and family to West Germany.
He had the following podium finishes at major championships: 3rd in the 1972 Olympics Lightweight class (437.5 kg); 3rd in the 1969 World Championships Lightweight class (425.0 kg); 1st in the 1970 World Championships Lightweight class (440.0 kg); 1st in the 1971 World Championships Lightweight class (440.0 kg); 3rd in the 1972 World Championships Lightweight class (437.5 kg); 2nd in the 1974 World Championships Lightweight class (302.5 kg); 2nd in the 1975 World Championships Lightweight class (312.5 kg); 3rd in the 1977 World Championships Lightweight class (297.5 kg); 2nd in the 1978 World Championships Lightweight class (302.5 kg); 3rd in the 1969 European Championships Lightweight class (425.0 kg); 3rd in the 1970 European Championships Lightweight class (427.5 kg); 2nd in the 1971 European Championships Lightweight class (435.0 kg); 2nd in the 1972 European Championships Lightweight class (442.5 kg); 3rd in the 1973 European Championships Lightweight class (292.5 kg); 2nd in the 1974 European Championships Lightweight class (297.5 kg); 2nd in the 1975 European Championships Lightweight class (312.5 kg); 1st in the 1976 European Championships Lightweight class (305.0 kg); 2nd in the 1977 European Championships Lightweight class (297.5 kg); 3rd in the 1978 European Championships Lightweight class (302.5 kg).
