Sharon Couch-Jewell was a high hurdler and a long jumper. She competed in the long jump at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 100 hurdles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Couch-Jewell attended the University of North Carolina, where she competed in both events, and was coached in the hurdles by former Olympian Charles Foster. She was a five-time All-American for the Tar Heels.
Couch-Jewell competed at the World Championships in 1993, 1995, and 1997 in the long jump, and at the 1993 World Indoors in the long jump. She had a sixth-place finish in the long jump at the 1998 Goodwill Games. Couch-Jewell was US Indoor Champion in the 60 metres hurdles in 2000. She later coached at the University of Tennessee before returning to Carolina to earn a masters’ degree in sports psychology. In 2016 she was inducted into the Tar Heels Trailblazers.
