Scott Allan went to college at Southern Cal and while there he worked for Peter Barrett at North Sails. After graduating with a business degree from USC, Allan went to work for Murphy & Nye, a well-known sailmaker in Eastport. In 1975 he went on his own and formed Scott Allan sailmakers in Annapolis, Maryland. He soon joined the Doyle Group of sailmakers, and a merger with Ulmer & Kolius led to the formation of UK Annapolis. In 1993 his company fully merged with UK, forming UK-Halsey Sailmakers Annapolis. His company was noted for its use of CAD (computer-automated design) in the design of its sails. He continued to compete on the waves, and in 1988 raced in the multi-hull ProSail series. Allan also coached sailing at the US Naval Academy. He was later named to the Annapolis Maritime Hall of Fame.
