Biografia

Three years after being stretchered off the track following a crash at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Saya Sakakibara became the first Australian cyclist to win an Olympic gold medal in BMX racing at Paris 2024. She also claimed back-to-back overall World Cup titles in 2023 and 2024 and was crowned continental champion in 2019 and 2023.

Saya Sakakibara was born on August 23, 1999, in Tallebudgera, a city in Gold Coast, Australia to father Martin and mother Yuki. Her journey into BMX racing began when she was just four years old, inspired by her older brother, Kai.

Initially, Saya did not enjoy BMX racing, crashing multiple times during her first race and leaving her bike untouched for months. However, she eventually gave BMX a second try and has been involved in the sport ever since.

Saya and her family lived in Japan for the first few years of her life before moving back to Australia in 2007. Saya and Kai joined the South Illawarra BMX Club and began competing on the junior circuit.

At age seven, she competed in her first World Championships for Japan and continued to represent Japan until reaching the junior elite level.
