Richárd Weisz started to compete in wrestling at the age of 19. In 1903 he won the first official Hungarian wrestling championship in heavyweight. He was also a national champion in weightlifting. The 1906 Olympics was his first appearance. At the 1908 Olympics, he won a gold medal in heavyweight. After winning the Olympics, he wrestled against a professional world champion, so his amateur status was suspended. In the spring of 1912 his amateur status was restored, but he did not take part in the Olympic Games. After completing his education, he served for a year in the Navy. Later he managed the "Japanese Cafe" in Budapest, and then worked as a coach and a referee.
