Leslie Byrd succeeded in beating the world record holder James Duncan in the 1912 Olympic discus, but was outclassed by Armas Taipale of Finland, who had a winning margin of almost ten feet. Captain R. L. Byrd, U.S. Marine Corps, won the discus at the Inter-Allied Games held at the Pershing Stadium, Paris, in 1919. Later in the year he finished second in the AAU.
Byrd also competed in the 1912 Olympic Baseball demonstration event.
