Matthew EBDEN

Born on November 26, 1987, in Durban, South Africa, Matthew Ebden began playing tennis at the age of five.

At 12, Matt moved with his family to Western Australia, where he continued to develop his tennis skills. Growing up, he idolised tennis legends Andre Agassi and Stefan Edberg, whose styles influenced his own game.

In addition to tennis, Matt was a natural sportsman, participating in rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics, swimming and cross-country during his school years in Perth.

In 2007, Matt competed in the qualifying tournament for the Australian Open but could not make it to the main draw.

Despite Matt’s singles career marked by challenges, he gradually climbed the ranks, securing a bronze medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and a place in the top 100 by 2011.

Ebden’s first ATP title came in the doubles at the 2011 Hall of Fame Open in the US alongside local Ryan Harrison.

Ebden secured his first win over a top 10 player at the ATP Masters Indian Wells in 2012, beating then world No. 8 American Mardy Fish on his way to the last 16.

Ebden made it to the third round of Wimbledon in 2018 and reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 39 in the same year, following a strong comeback after undergoing left knee surgery in 2016 which sidelined him for seven months.

While ATP Tour titles in singles eluded the Australian tennis player, his consistent success in doubles established him as one of the top players in the discipline.

In addition to his three Grand Slam wins and an Olympic gold, Matthew Ebden has collected nearly a dozen ATP titles in doubles.

His partnership with Rohan Bopanna has been particularly fruitful, with the duo winning ATP Masters 1000 titles at the Indian Wells Masters in 2023 and the Miami Open in 2024.

Ebden also reached the US Open final in 2023 with Bopanna and the 2022 Australian Open final with Max Purcell.

Ebden also made deep runs in mixed doubles, finishing as a finalist at both the 2021 Australian Open and the 2022 Wimbledon alongside compatriot Samantha Stosur.

On his Olympic debut at Paris 2024, Ebden and Peers’ remarkable performance saw them rally from a set and a break down to defeat the American pair Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram 6-7(6) 7-6(1) 10-8 in a thrilling final.

"We were up against it, we were down a set and a break. It was not looking good. We were losing for sure, but we kept believing, kept fighting, kept hanging strong." said Ebden after the final.

Ebden and Peers celebrated the win with their children in a heartwarming scene at the end. Peers embraced his two young girls and Ebden flung his son skywards in joy.

In the singles at Paris 2024, Ebden ran into eventual champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the first round and was predictably knocked out.
