Mario Tovar competed as a wrestler at five Olympic Games, consecutively from 1952 through 1968. At the time he was only the second wrestler to have competed in five Olympic Games, and through 2008, this has only been achieved seven times. Tovar actually competed in six Olympic tournaments, competing in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in 1964, something accomplished by only six Olympians (Wilfried Dietrich competed in eight, however). At the Pan-American Games Tovar won a silver medal in lightweight freestyle in 1959, and bronze medals in 1955 lightweight freestyle and 1963 featherweight freestyle. He competed at the World Championships only one time, in 1962 in the 70 kg. freestyle class.
