John Johnstone won the AAU high jump in 1912 and the indoor AAU high jump in 1913. At the IC4A meet, he placed third in both 1915-16. After graduating from Worcester Academy, he competed for Harvard and the Boston AA. After college he and his wife initially settled in Lewiston, Maine, where Johnstone was a French professor and coached track. That lasted for only a few years before they returned to Worcester where he became a professor and coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. After retiring from that position, he worked as a substitute teacher and volunteer track coach at Assumption College in Worcester.
