John Burritt was a top athlete, playing on the 1951 Colorado state high school football champions from Hotchkiss. He also wrestled, ran track and was the Western Slope 156-lb. boxing champion during high school. He then attended Western State College, where he ran cross-country and took up skiing, competing for Western at the 1955 and 1956 NCAA Championships. He later worked as a lab and x-ray supervisor at Delta Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colorado. In addition to his Olympic appearance, Burritt competed at the 1959 World Championships and the 1959 Pre-Olympic test at Squaw Valley. In 1980 Burritt retired to tend to the family farm, but then built a ski lodge and alpine hill on Grand Mesa, and has spent much of his adult life teaching skiing to children and young adults.
