In both the 1956 Final Trials and the Olympic Final, Joel Shankle finished third in the 110 meter hurdles behind Lee Calhoun and Jack Davis. Shankle was also a fine long jumper, and decathlete, winning the 1955 NCAA long jump for Duke and placing third in the AAU decathlon that year. After graduation from Duke, Shankle joined the Navy and was a Naval aviator from 1959-65. He later became a pilot for American Airlines for 28 years, retiring in 1993.
