James Smith attended Harvard, graduating in 1953, after which he entered law school. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War and then was a member of the US Marine Corps reserve. In 1954 he shot on the US team that won the team free rifle World Championships. In 1955 he helped his USMCR “Blue” team win the Rattlesnake Trophy in the US national team matches.
