Jim Reilly attended New York University. He competed in the 100 and 400 metre freestyle at the 1912 Olympics, but did not advance out of round one in either event. He later became much better known as a swim coach, coaching at Rutgers from 1916-57, and he was later made a member of the Rutgers Athletic Hall of Fame. He coached many national champions, and one well-known Olympian, George Kojac. Reilly was director of the Eastern Collegiate Swimming Association from 1920-27. The Rutgers swimming program’s loyalty trophy is named in Reilly’s honor.
