Biografia

Jim Gaughran swam and played water polo at Stanford, captaining both teams in 1953-54. He made the All-Pacific Coast conference water polo team in 1951-53, and in swimming was Pacific Coast conference champion in the 100 yard freestyle in 1953-54. Gaughran later attended law school at Stanford, and worked in the office of the California Attorney General, but he left that job to return to Stanford and coach the swim and water polo teams from 1960-80. He trained 26 Olympic swimmers, and helped Stanford win one NCAA team title, while coaching 15 NCAA champions. In 1973 Gaughran headed a US State Department sponsored swimming team on a trip to China, the first official State Department-sponsored cultural exchange to China since 1949.

Gaughran served on the US Olympic Swimming Committee (1968-72), the US Olympic Water Polo Committee (1964-72), and was President of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. He is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame, the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame, and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
