Although he only competed in backstroke at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Gary Binfield was a fifteen-time All-American at the University of South California at backstroke, freestyle and medley events. He won his heat of the 200 metres backstroke but his time only placed him in the B final, where he finished last. Binfield also swam in the heats of the medley relay. It was the medley relay that provided him with his only major international medal, a silver, as part of the England team at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. He went on to coach at the University of Georgia and Brown University before going into business with a company that operated swimming pools.
Binfield died at the age of just 42 following a massive heart attack that occurred during a gym session.
