Dave Radcliffe swam in high school and then at U Cal Berkeley. In 1956 he was in the US Army when he competed in the Olympics. He later taught high school and was a high school administrator in California. Radcliffe retired from competitive swimming after the Melbourne Olympics, or so it seemed. In 1995 he returned to the sport after a 38-year gap, and started competing masters swimming. In masters competition he set 13 American long-distance swimmming records and was named All-American 18 times.
