As the top-ranked American female diver at the 1972 Olympics, Cindy Potter was confidently expected to be among the medals but suffered a severe foot injury during a practice session in München and finished 7th in the springboard and only 21st in the platform. At the 1975 Pan American Games, as Mrs. Mclngvale, she won bronze in the springboard and at the 1976 Olympics she competed only in the springboard and also won Olympic bronze. She was a prodigious performer in the AAU championships, equalling Pat McCormick's record of 27 titles in 1977 and eventually winning another to break the record. Cynthia Potter graduated from Indiana in 1973. She has since become a diving coach and an outstanding analyst on televised diving competitions.
