In 1971 Csaba Hegedűs was elected "Sportsman of the Year" in Hungary. In 1973, he only survived a severe traffic accident after two years of medical care. He then became head coach of the Hungarian national team from 1979-1989, their most successful period ever. Hegedűs then became a sports administrator with the national wrestling association and the NOC of Hungary, as well as a member of the Fédération Internationale de Lutte Amateurs (FILA).
He had the following finishes at major championships – 1971 World Championship: 82 kg Greco-Roman (1st); 1975 World Championship: 82 kg Greco-Roman (4th); 1977 World Championship: 90 kg Greco-Roman (4th); 1977 European Championship: 90 kg Greco-Roman (1st).
