Vladimir MURAVYOV

Kazakhstan's Vladimir Muravyov was the top Soviet sprinter of the 1980s. Muravyov first competed at the 1980 Olympics, where he was sixth in the 100 and ran the opening leg for the Soviets in the 4×100 relay, which won the gold medal. At the 1982 European Championships, Muravyov was seventh in the 200 and at the first World Championships in 1983, he reached the semi-finals of the 200 and was a member of the Soviet sprint relay team that won bronze. Muravyov missed the 1984 Summer Olympics due to the boycott, but was sixth at the 1985 IAAF World Cup in the 200 and third in the 4×100 relay, winning a gold medal at the 1986 European Championships in the 4×100. At the 1987 World Championships, Muravyov was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 100, but won a silver medal in the sprint relay. His final international meet was the 1988 Olympics, where he led the Soviet sprint team to a gold medal, after the USA had been disqualified in the heats. From 1987-2000 Muravyov worked as a lecturer in biomechanics at the Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health, St. Petersburg. Since 2000, Muravyov has lived in Germany, where he works as an athletics coach, also coaching his nephew Vyacheslav, who competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, among others.
