Svetlana Nageykina won her only major international tournament medal, a gold in the relay, at the 1988 Winter Olympics in her first major international tournament. During her long career Nageykina competed at three more Olympics and six World Championships, but did not medal again, mainly because she was not selected for the Russian relay team. Her best individual places were fourth (10 km at the 1988 Olympics and in 5 and 30 km at the 1999 World Championships). Mainly because she was never selected to the relay team, Nageykina started to compete for Belarus at the start of the 2000s and, after 14 years, competed again in the relay at a major international tournament at the 2002 Winter Olympics, but the Belarus team finished in fifth position. Domestically Nageykina won one Soviet title in 1987 in the relay and won five Russian titles (5 km in 1993 and 1996, 30 km in 1993, 50 km in 1998 and the relay in 1993).
