In addition to his two Olympics appearances in 1980 and 1984, Sixten Wackström rode for Finland at the 1979, 1981, and 1983 World Championships in the team time trial, placing 15th in 1979, 17th in 1981, and 11th in 1983. Wackström also rode the Peace Race in 1988, although he did not finish, and rode Paris-Nice in 1981 as an amateur, placing 80th. His major podium during his career came in 1981 at the Tour of Berlin when he placed third. At the Nordic Championships, Wackström won gold in the road race in 1980 and in individual and team pursuit in 1984 and won a bronze in team time trial in 1980. At the Finnish Championships, he won 10 individual titles and 5 team titles. He was named the best Finnish cyclist of the year in 1981. Wackström was from a cycling family as his father Ole competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, and his brother, Patrick competed with Sixten with the Finnish time trial team at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics, also riding the road race in 1984.
