Javelin thrower Rolf Herings was better known for his coaching activities as a graduate sports teacher. He was first a trainer for the football club 1. FC Köln, where he held several positions. Among others he was an excellent trainer for goalkeepers such as Harald “Toni” Schumacher and Bodo Illgner (both later national goalkeepers) and was twice caretaking trainer after the release of Gyula Lóránt in 1972 and Karl-Heinz Heddergott in 1980. Additionally he was the national coach of the female German javelin throwers between 1966 and 1968.

As an athlete, Herings was twice German champion, in 1961 and 1965, and placed eighth at the 1962 European Championships. In 1965 he placed sixth at the European Cup and won the gold medal at the Military World Championships (CISM) in 1960. He earned bronze in 1961 and gold in 1965 at the Summer Universiade. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games Herings placed seventh, and four years later was eliminated in the qualifying round. In his youth he was a gymnast and handball player.
