Midfielder Reinhard Lauck was a member of the East German (GDR) football team that beat Poland 3-1 at the Montréal Olympics to become the first German team to win an Olympic gold medal. From 1973-77 he played 33 international matches with the East German national team, scoring 3 goals, and also 7 more with the Olympic team. He was also on the East German team that surprisingly beat West Germany 1-0 in the 1974 World Cup.

Domestically Lauck played with SC Cottbus (1963-65), Vorwärts Neubrandenburg (1965-66), Energie Cottbus (1967-68), 1. FC Union Berlin (1968-73) and BFC Dynamo Berlin (1973-81). In 1979 and 1980 he helped Dynamo Berlin to win the GDR national titles. In 1968 he won the East German cup with 1. FC Union Berlin.

Lauck later worked as a locksmith, construction worker and coal carrier. His social descent was accompanied by alcohol abuse. In 1997 he was found unconscious on the street with head injuries and severely drunk. He died two weeks later in hospital, never awakening from his coma.
