Georgian Nodar Khokhashvili was selected for the Soviet national team in 1962, when he won a freestyle featherweight silver at the Soviet Championships. Khokhashvili made his international début at the 1962 World Championships, where he lost to Osamu Watanabe and Mohamed Khadem Khorasani in the final rounds and had to settle for fourth. At the 1964 Olympics, Khokhashvili won a bronze medal, after losing again to Watanabe and drawing with Stancho Ivanov. After the Olympics, Khokhashvili switched to lightweight and won 1969 European Championships silver and 1969 World Championships bronze in that class. Domestically, in addition to his 1962 silver, Khokhashvili was Soviet freestyle lightweight champion in 1969 and won freestyle lightweight bronze in 1972.
