Matt Wearn, a two-time Olympic champion and multiple World Championships medallist, has firmly established his legacy in Australian sporting history.
Born on September 30, 1995, in Duncraig, a suburb of Perth, Matt Wearn dreamt of a career in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Growing up, he would pretend to be Warren Tredrea, an Australian Football Hall of Fame recipient and punt a football at the local oval.
Despite his passion for AFL, Matt’s roots in sailing ran deep. Raised in a sailing family, he was introduced to the sport at the age of four, following in the footsteps of his sister Kate.
Matt did a sailing course at the Royal Perth Yacht Club, beginning with the Optimist class boat and eventually transitioning into the Laser class dinghy.
Alongside sailing, Wearn was also a fan of basketball and admired Michael Jordan, the six-time NBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist.
Wearn was equally talented at playing Australian rules football and sailing but pursuing a professional career in both sports simultaneously proved difficult.
