In 1956 Joe Shaw won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at 135 lbs, and also won the Intercity Golden Gloves Championship. He qualified for the US boxing team at the Melbourne Olympics, winning one bout as a light-welter before losing in the quarter-finals. In 1957, Shaw moved up in weight to 147 lbs. and again won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Championship and the Intercity Golden Gloves title. Shaw turned professional in December 1957, winning his first bout against Alfonso Estrada on points. He had a decent journeyman career through March 1970, when he lost by TKO to Bennie Briscoe, but Shaw never got a title shot. He finished with a professional career record of 33 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws.
