Herman Groman, a Yale grad, represented the Chicago AA at the 1904 Olympics. He was an early leader in the 400 m but faded in the closing stages and eventually lost second place to Frank Waller by less than one meter After Yale, Groman attended Rush Medical College from which he earned his M.D. in 1907. He set up a practice in Hammond, Indiana, but he was also active in community affairs and was on the board of several local businesses.
