Harald Hein was a talented fencer, on both épée and foil. He medalled at the World Junior Champions with both weapons (winning the 1970 foil title), before breaking through in the seniors. His greatest successes came as a member of the West German team, winning three world titles: 1973 (épée), 1977 (foil) and 1983 (foil) as well as an Olympic title in 1976 (foil) and five additional medals. Individually, his best performance was second at the 1977 World Championships (foil), and third in 1978 and 1985. He also won five West German foil titles between 1969 and 1979. Hein later worked as a coach, before passing away of a brain tumor at age 58.
