Gary Suter was a defenseman who played for 17 years in the NHL (1985-2003), starting out with the Calgary Flames for 8½ years, followed by 4½ years with the Chicago Blackhawks, and finishing with four years with the San Jose Sharks. In 1986 he made the NHL All-Rookie team and won the Calder Trophy as the Rookie of the Year, and in 1987-88 he made the NHL second-team All-Star team. He played in four NHL All-Star Games, and in 1989, played with the Flames when they won the Stanley Cup. Internationally, Suter played for the US at two Winter Olympics, the 1984 World Junior Championships, the 1992 World Championships, and the 1997 World Cup. He also played two years of college hockey at the University of Wisconsin. His brother, Rob Suter, played for the US with the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
