Middleweight boxer Ewald Wichert narrowly lost his opening bout at the 1968 Mexico Olympics on a split 2-3 decision against the eventual gold medalist, Chris Finnegan of Great Britain. It was a controversial decision, one which saw well-known and worldwide accepted West German commentator Werner Schneyder (who was also a comedian and sports journalist in Austria and West Germany), live on television, insult both the jury and referee. In 1965, Wichert won the Military World Championships, and in 1966 and 1968 he was the West German national champion. He later worked as a boxing coach at Bonner Boxclub.
