It was the wish of David Pastrnak’s late father – Milan Pastrnak – that his son plays professional ice hockey. The Czech star, born in Havirov in 1996, lost his father to a battle with cancer in May 2013 and continuing to make him proud has driven Pastrnak to the highest heights of hockey ever since.
The first signs of Pastrnak’s innate talent were on display in the under-18 Czech hockey league. In the 2011-2012 season, the right winger led the league with 41 goals and 68 points. Off the back of his stunning season, not long after he turned 16, the Czech then upped sticks to Sweden where he spent two seasons with Södertälje in the Allsvenskan Leage. Living on his own he went to school alongside his playing to study English and Swedish in between practices.
In 2014, just over a year after his dad’s passing, the Czech went 25th overall to the Boston Bruins. Pointing his finger up to the sky as he got picked as a gesture to his father, not even Pastrnak could have predicted that so soon after signing he would be making his debut, and yet the hockey prodigy did just that.
