Aman Sehrawat

Aman lost his parents within a year of each other when he was in his early teens. He was cared for by his grandfather Mangeram Sehrawat but Aman spent a good amount of time at Chhatrasal.

Despite the personal setbacks, Aman continued to train hard under his coach Lalit Kumar. Attack and speed were always his stronger suits but defence was his Achilles heel.

Aman’s breakthrough arrived in 2018 when he won the bronze medal at the Cadet World Championships in 51kg. He returned to the same competition the following year to win bronze in the 55kg division. He also clinched gold at the Cadet Asian Championships in the same weight division in 2019.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya’s silver medal in the 57kg division at Tokyo 2020 made Aman believe that the Olympic medal was within his reach.

Aman won the national title in 2021 and it wasn’t long before he took his success at the junior and cadel levels to the higher stage.

In 2022, Aman won the gold medal at the U23 Asian Championships. He also became the first-ever Indian wrestler to become an U23 world champion that same year. All of Aman’s medals started coming in the 57kg division.

Aman clinched his first major senior title with the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana. He then won a bronze medal in the 57kg category at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

With Ravi Kumar Dahiya struggling with injuries, Aman Sehrawat emerged as India’s top wrestler in the 57kg division.

Aman started the Olympic year by winning the Zagreb Open Ranking Series in January. All of Aman’s wins came on technical superiority.

He fell one win short of securing a Paris 2024 quota from the Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers in Bishkek but eventually obtained the quota at the World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Istanbul in May.

Aman Sehrawat, interestingly, had bested Ravi Kumar Dahiya in the national wrestling trials to earn the right to represent India in the men's 57kg category at Paris 2024. He was the only Indian male wrestler to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Aman Sehrawat won the bronze in the men’s freestyle 57kg event at Paris 2024 by defeating Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz, a Pan American Games bronze medallist, with a convincing 13-5 scoreline.

Earlier at Paris 2024, the Indian wrestler registered back-to-back wins on technical superiority with victory over Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov, former European champion, in the round of 16 and over former world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, Aman was defeated by eventual gold medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan.
